Anxiety and Stress

Anxiety

Anxiety is a feeling of worry and fear we all have sometimes.

It can help if we are in danger. But too much can be a problem.

What is Anxiety?

Anxiety helps us if we are in danger. But sometimes we feel it too much.

When we feel anxious, our bodies might freeze, fight, or run away.

We might feel numb, have a pounding heart, or feel dread.

What Does Anxiety Look Like?

Anxiety affects thoughts, feelings, and body. It can change how we act or feel.

We might think, “I can’t cope,” or “I’m going crazy.”

We might feel anxious, nervous, or overwhelmed.

Physically, we might feel restless, tired, or have a tight stomach.

Managing Anxiety

Breathing exercises or grounding techniques can help manage anxiety.

Breathing slowly helps calm the body. Try breathing in for 4, holding for 7, and out for 8.

Place a hand on chest and stomach. Breathe in and let belly swell. Breathe out slowly.

Worrying

Worry is asking “What if…?” It can make it hard to make choices.

Rumination is thinking “If only…” about the past. It can be a problem if it happens a lot.

Tips to Help Manage Worry and Rumination

Write worries down. Take time to think about them later.

Ask questions about worries and decide what to do next.
